Mac drama

So I finally did it. I bought an iMac.

Such an exciting moment ... bringing it home, setting it up, turning it on ... holy cow, what a beauty!!!

Then reality hit. I had no idea how to use it. Thank goodness for two teenage daughters who use strictly mac's at school! They've been my saving graces the last couple days as I try to figure out how to navigate around this monster.

However, there is one issue I cannot seem to fix. Photoshop. My little brain was so excited about getting the iMac that I never really took into account what I would need to edit my photos like I've been doing for the past few years. Of course my old Photoshop program is NOT going to work on Mac, though luckily (or so I thought) I have a free version of PSE 6 for mac. That should do it, right? Wrong.  None of the actions I normally use will work, even though I'm installing them correctly.

So I go looking to buy PS. Okay, there's no way I have the $$$ for any of the latest versions of PS. Now I'm thinking PSE 10. Does anyone have any experience with PSE 10?? It's on sale today for 50% off ($50) so I need to make a decision.

I have to say I hate PSE 6 compared to regular PS but it looks like PSE is my only affordable option. Please someone, give me some thoughts. Or your experience. Something!

Thank you,
Sharon

* Update: I purchases PSE 10 and so far it seems to be similar (though not as similar as I'd like) to my old PS program. I appreciate all the suggestions left for me! I've been trying to respond to each one individually.

I think if you look around at some blogs or do a search that you will be able to find some free actions for PSE6. Check out this link for some free actions, some of which I think are for PSE... or e-mail the gal and I'm sure she could guide you.

These sites all had some available at one time... you can check them out and see if you can still download them or e-mail the blog owners. Good luck!

OR, see if you can find a free copy of upgrade to PSE online perhaps PSE 7 and see if actions are available for that.

I had the same problem even though I just purchased PSE 9 to go with my new mac. This article saved me.

DELETE the mediatdatabase.db3 file.
****This was the most useful info *****Do not rename the .db3 file, just delete. I promise it will be okay. When you restart your PSE, you will get a box saying “Building Content and Effects.” It will take a minute or two and then your actions are there. You have to go and delete it every time you add a new action.

Good Luck!

I have a new in box version of an upgrade to Mac PS-CS5! but you have to have an earlier version of it to upgrade. If you can find one, I will send you this one that I have, it's probably selling for $400 or close to it but it's worth nothing to me cus I have a PC...lol!

I don't use a mac but did just purchase PSE10 and was able to get Pioneer woman's actions again without any problem. I just followed the directions she linked to. I don't know anything about actions with macs and the steps to install. I'm sure if you follow the steps you'll be find. and there are a lot of resourses who could help you with problems. PSE10 is great so far. Has Layer Masks!! That is so helpful!! Not more work arounds!

Hi, Sharon! I think for 50 bucks you should take a chance on PSE 10.

I'm glad you purchased PSE10 especially at that price! I use PSE9 and I really like it even though I have a long way to go to learn all that it can do.

Have fun! And congrats on the iMac!

That was my concern too if I bought an apple...first learning it sans kids to help me out. Though I have tons of friends that are mac users.
I've noticed the price reduction of the new PSE. So do you think I should make the leap?

Wow, I've got to hand it to you. I'm just an old dog and I can't learn new tricks. My son has a Mac notebook and when I visit him, I sometimes use it, but I'm still intimidated by it. I'll just hang on to what I've got. Good luck, I know you will master it.

I will be eager to read how you like using the Mac in comparison to your PC. The class I am taking at RISD is all on Macs and I can't say I am dying to go out and buy one...I am very happy with my cheaper pc...but then again I know little about computers!

I use PSE8 on my pc and use CS5 at school...I have found for my home needs Elements is really all I need. I do plan on upgrading to PSE10 though.

Well, of course, I'm late in seeing your post. I have Photoshop Elements 4.0 so you can see how far behind the game I am! Good luck, and enjoy your Mac. I'd like to get one, but I can't convince Ted! I guess I need teenagers . . . . well, maybe not!

I am on my second iMac (wore the first one out) and have had great luck with them.

I have PSE 9, now. Before that, I used Corel.

Good luck with getting everything set up. I am going to check out the links that have been sent to you, too.

I used to use Corel and then it just stopped working for no reason. I have been using PSE 2. Yes, don't laugh. For $50 I would love to get PSE 10. As for the Mac, I just can't seem to wrap my brain around it. But most people love it. I think I'm just a PC person. Enjoy your new Mac. Can I ask where you saw PSE 10 for 50% off?

I'm happy to help but I've never used PSE. I think it's quite a robust program now, though, so should be very good for you and photo editing.

You will soon be eternally in love with your Mac. :)
